The Ring Nebula is a beautiful sight in the night sky.

It sits in the northern constellation called Lyra. You can find it between the stars Beta and Gamma Lyrae. It is also known as Messier 57 or NGC 6720. This object is a planetary nebula. A planetary nebula is a glowing cloud of gas in space. It is too faint to see with just your eyes. You need a small telescope to see its shape clearly.

A planetary nebula forms in a very specific way. It starts when a star reaches its final stages of life. Before it becomes a white dwarf, the star pushes out a huge envelope of gas. This gas is called ionized gas. This gas glows brightly as it moves into space. The nebula has been expanding for about 1,610 years. Because of this, it now has a specific diameter. It is shaped like a prolate spheroid. This means it is like a ball that has been stretched out.

People have been studying this nebula for a long time. Charles Messier discovered it in late January 1779. He was actually looking for comets when he found it. Another astronomer named Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix found it two weeks later. He thought it looked like a fading planet. In 1864, William Huggins studied the light from the nebula. He found that it was made of glowing gases. This proved it was not just a group of tiny stars. The first photo of the nebula was taken in 1886.

There are many interesting facts about the Ring Nebula. The central star is a white dwarf made of carbon and oxygen. This star is about 300 times more luminous than our Sun. It is very difficult to spot because its magnitude is 15.75. The colors in the ring tell us what is inside. The blue-green parts come from oxygen. The reddish parts come from hydrogen and nitrogen. The nebula is moving through space at a steady speed. It expands about one arcsecond every century.

You can learn a lot by looking at the stars. The Ring Nebula is a great way to practice using a telescope. It is located near the bright star Vega. Vega is part of a famous group called the Summer Triangle. If you use a special filter, the ring looks even brighter. This is helpful if there is a lot of light in your town. Looking at the nebula helps us understand how stars change. It shows us what happens when a star reaches the end of its journey.
