NGC 7027

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

NGC 7027 is a bright cloud in space. It has many names like the Jewel Bug Nebula. Some people call it the Magic Carpet Nebula. This object is a planetary nebula. It sits in the Cygnus constellation.

This nebula is very young. It is only about 600 years old. Most nebulae are much larger than this one. NGC 7027 is only 0.2 by 0.1 light-years across.

It has a very complex shape. There is an elliptical region of gas. An equatorial belt sits inside a huge neutral cloud. A translucent shroud of dust surrounds the inner parts. The nebula even has shapes like a clover leaf.

A hot star sits in the center. This star is a white dwarf. It has about 0.7 times the mass of our Sun. The star is very bright. It radiates at 7,700 times the Sun's luminosity. This star might be part of a binary system. That means there could be a second star nearby. Interactions with a second star might create the jets and spikes.

These jets make spike-like structures in the shell. The center also emits X-rays. This shows that the temperatures are very high.

People first found this nebula in 1878. Édouard Stephan discovered it at the Marseille Observatory. He used a reflector telescope. Later, scientists used the Yerkes Observatory in 1977. They used a small Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope there. They wanted to find its exact position. This helped them match photos with radio maps.

Since 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope has taken many photos. These pictures help us see the nebula clearly.

This nebula is full of interesting things. It is very rich in carbon. Scientists use it to study carbon chemistry. They also found tiny nanodiamonds there. In 2019, scientists found helium hydride in this nebula. This was the first molecule in the universe. It formed about 100,000 years after the Big Bang.

The intense UV radiation breaks apart molecules. This makes the nebula a unique place to study.

NGC 7027 helps us understand how stars live. The original star was 3 to 4 times the mass of our Sun. This nebula shows how stars lose mass. It proves that some stars do not become supernovas. Instead, they can avoid being destroyed in huge explosions.

This is important for learning about the life of stars. We can see how gas and dust move in space. It is a tiny but mighty part of our universe.
