NGC 7027

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

NGC 7027 is a remarkably dense and young planetary nebula. It is located within the constellation Cygnus. Many people know it by other names, such as the Jewel Bug Nebula or the Magic Carpet Nebula. A planetary nebula is a cloud of gas and dust. It forms when a star reaches the end of its life. NGC 7027 is one of the smallest planetary nebulae known to scientists. However, it is also one of the most extensively studied objects in space. It is visually very bright when viewed through a telescope.

The nebula is currently undergoing a very specific process of evolution. It is in a short phase where molecules in its envelope are being dissociated. Dissociation means the molecules are being broken down into their individual atoms. Following this, the atoms are being ionized. Ionization occurs when atoms gain or lose electrons due to intense ultraviolet radiation. This radiation comes from the hot central star. This process makes the nebula a unique laboratory for studying carbon chemistry. Scientists can observe how dense molecular material reacts to strong UV radiation.

NGC 7027 has a very complex and layered structure. At its core, there is an elliptical region of ionized gas. Inside this region sits an equatorial belt. This belt is located within a massive neutral cloud. The entire inner structure is wrapped in a translucent shroud of gas and dust. The nebula is shaped like a prolate ellipsoidal shell. It also contains a photodissociation region that looks like a clover leaf. Several shocks and X-ray jets puncture the inner shell. These jets create distinct, spike-like structures. Around the main nebula, there are also faint, blue concentric shells.

History shows how our understanding of this object has changed. Édouard Stephan first discovered the nebula in 1878. He used a reflector telescope at the Marseille Observatory. For a long time, scientists thought it was a protoplanetary nebula. They believed the central star was too cool to ionize the surrounding gas. However, we now know it is a true planetary nebula in its earliest stage. In 1977, researchers at the Yerkes Observatory used a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. They sought an accurate optical position for the nebula. This allowed them to compare photographs with radio maps. Since 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope has provided many detailed images.

The scale and mass of NGC 7027 are quite surprising. While typical planetary nebulae are about 1 light-year across, this one is much smaller. It measures only 0.2 by 0.1 light-years. Despite its small size, it is quite massive. The expanding halo has a mass about three times that of our Sun. This halo is 100 times more massive than the ionized central region. Studying this mass loss provides important evidence for astronomers. It shows that stars a few times more massive than the Sun can avoid supernova explosions. Instead of being destroyed in a massive blast, they transition into nebulae.

Inside the nebula, scientists have found many incredible things. The nebula is very rich in carbon. There is also evidence that nanodiamonds exist within it. In 2019, researchers detected the helium hydride ion for the first time in space. This molecule is thought to be the earliest molecule formed in the Universe. It appeared about 100,000 years after the Big Bang. The central star is a white dwarf with a mass about 0.7 times our Sun. It is incredibly bright, radiating at 7,700 times the Sun's luminosity. The central region emits X-rays, which indicates very high temperatures.

Finally, the nebula helps us understand the relationship between stars. The original star that created this nebula was much larger. It is believed to have been 3 to 4 times the mass of the Sun. Scientists suspect the central star is actually a binary system. This means there may be a second, undetected star. It is hypothesized that interactions with this second star helped shape the nebula. These interactions might be responsible for the complex jets and spikes. The white dwarf may also have an accretion disk. An accretion disk is a rotating structure that could act as a source of high temperatures.
