NGC 7027

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

NGC 7027 is a bright cloud in space. Some call it the Jewel Bug Nebula. It sits in the Cygnus constellation.

This is a planetary nebula. That is a cloud of gas around a star. It is very young. It is only about 600 years old. Most of these clouds are much bigger. NGC 7027 is only 0.2 by 0.1 light-years across.

A hot star sits in the center. This star is a white dwarf. A white dwarf is a small, hot star. The star is very bright. It gives off a lot of light. The heat from the star makes the gas glow. The heat also breaks apart small molecules.

Scientists found many things in the cloud. They found tiny nanodiamonds. They also found helium hydride. This was the first kind of molecule in the universe. The nebula also has much carbon. This makes it a great place to study space chemistry.
