It sits in a group of stars called Lyra. Charles Messier found it in 1779. You cannot see it with just your eyes. You need a small telescope to see it.

A planetary nebula is a ring of glowing gas. This happens when a star reaches its final stages. The star lets out a huge cloud of gas. This gas stays around the star. In the center is a white dwarf. A white dwarf is a small, dense star.

This star is made of carbon and oxygen.

The gas in the ring has many colors. Some parts look blue-green. This color comes from oxygen. Other parts look reddish. This color comes from hydrogen and nitrogen. The nebula is growing. It has been expanding for about 1,610 years. It looks like a ring from Earth. But it is actually shaped like a stretched ball. This shape is called a prolate spheroid.
