Long ago, in the year 1054, people saw a bright star. Chinese and Japanese observers called it a guest star. This was actually the star exploding.

In 1843, a man named Lord Rosse drew the cloud. His drawing had arms like a crab. This is how the nebula got its name.

The cloud is still growing today. It moves at half the speed of light.

A special star sits in the center. It is called a pulsar. A pulsar is a spinning neutron star. This star spins 30.2 times every second.

It sends out pulses of radiation. This radiation helps us study the sky. For example, we used it to study Saturn's moon, Titan. The nebula is very far away. It is about 6,500 light-years from Earth.
