The Dumbbell Nebula is a beautiful sight in deep space.

It is also called the Apple Core Nebula. Some people call it Messier 27 or NGC 6853. This object is a planetary nebula. A planetary nebula is a cloud of gas around a white dwarf. A white dwarf is a small, dim star. This nebula sits in the constellation Vulpecula. It is part of a group called the Summer Triangle. It is a very important thing for us to study.

This nebula has a very interesting shape. It looks like a prolate spheroid. That means it looks like a stretched-out ball. We see it from our side along its equator. The center has many dark and bright spots. These spots are called knots. Some knots have dark tails behind them. Other knots are irregular and have no tails. The heads of these knots have bright cusps. These are local photoionization fronts. This is a way light interacts with the gas.

People have been looking at this nebula for a long time. Charles Messier discovered it in 1764. It was the very first planetary nebula found. Because it is bright, it is easy to see. Its brightness is a visual magnitude of 7.5. You can see it using binoculars. Many people use amateur telescopes to look at it. It is a popular target for stargazers.

Scientists have learned many facts about its age and size. It is about 1360 light-years away from Earth. In 1970, researchers found its expansion velocity. The nebula grows at 31 km/s. This suggests a kinematic age of 9,800 years. In 1992, others found an upper age limit. They said it might be 14,600 years old. The central star is a white dwarf progenitor. It has a radius of 0.13 light seconds. This makes it larger than most white dwarfs. Napiwotzki estimated its mass in 1999.

Looking at the nebula helps us understand the stars. It shows us what happens to stars at the end. The knots and tails look like shapes in our own world. Some look like symmetric objects. Others look like messy clouds. The way the light hits the gas is like a flashlight in a fog. We can see the shape of the gas through the light. It is a wonderful window into space.
