It is also known by names like M44 or Praesepe. This name means "manger" or "crib" in Latin. It is one of the nearest open clusters to our own Earth. An open cluster is a group of stars that stay together. This specific cluster holds about 1,000 stars. It is a very bright and important part of our night sky.

Inside the cluster, stars are arranged in a special way. This happens through a process called mass segregation. This means the heavy, bright stars stay in the center core. The smaller and dimmer stars move toward the outer edges. This outer area is called the halo or the corona. The bright inner core is about 23 light years wide. The whole cluster has a total mass of about 500 to 600 times our Sun. Most of the stars are small M dwarfs. About 30% of them are stars like our own Sun.

People have looked at this cluster for many centuries. Ancient Greeks saw it as a manger for two donkeys. In ancient China, skywatchers saw a ghost riding in a carriage. They thought it looked like pollen blowing from willow trees. The famous astronomer Ptolemy called it a nebulous mass. In 1609, Galileo used a telescope to look at it. He was able to see 40 individual stars. Later, Charles Messier added it to his famous catalog in 1769.

There are many interesting numbers to know about the Beehive. It is about 600 million years old. The cluster is located between 520 and 610 light years away from us. Some scientists believe it is closer, at 182 parsecs. It is 1.5 degrees across in the sky. This size makes it easy to see with binoculars. You can also use a small telescope to find it. The brightest star in the cluster is named Epsilon Cancri.

Scientists have even found planets orbiting stars in this cluster. These planets are called hot Jupiters. They are huge gas giants that orbit very close to their stars. In 2012, researchers found two of these planets. They were named Pr0201 b and Pr0211 b. Later, a second planet was found in the Pr0211 system. The Kepler space telescope also found many more planets there. These discoveries show us how planets can exist in crowded star groups.
