Taurus is a large and famous constellation in the northern winter sky.

It is one of the oldest patterns of stars known to humans. Some experts believe it was even painted in the Lascaux caves around 15,000 BC. For a long time, it marked where the Sun sat during the spring equinox. This helped people track the seasons for farming. Because of this, many ancient lands like Egypt, Greece, and Rome used bull figures in their stories. Today, its symbol looks like a bull's head.

Many interesting things happen within these star boundaries. The constellation is crossed by the ecliptic, which is the path the Sun seems to take. It is also unique because it is crossed by the galactic equator and the celestial equator. This makes it a very special place in the sky. You can see the bright star Aldebaran, which is an orange giant.

It has about 116% of the mass of our Sun. Aldebaran is called "the follower" because it follows the Pleiades stars across the sky. It even looks like a red eye in the face of the bull.

Scientists have studied Taurus for hundreds of years to learn about space. In 1731, John Bevis found the Crab Nebula, which is a remnant of a huge star explosion. This explosion happened in 1054 and was so bright people saw it during the day.

Later, in 1790, William Herschel found the Crystal Ball Nebula. He noticed a star at its center, which was a big discovery. In 1864, William Huggins used light to show that some nebulae are actually clouds of glowing gas. These discoveries helped us understand how stars and gas work together.

There are many specific objects to find if you look closely. The Pleiades is a famous group of stars often called the Seven Sisters.

This cluster has between 500 and 1,000 stars that are about 100 million years old. Another group is the Hyades, which helps form the bull's face. You can also find the star T Tauri, which is a young star just emerging from gas and dust. It is the model for a whole class of stars. The Taurus-Auriga complex is also nearby, which is a huge area where new stars are being born.

Learning about Taurus helps you connect the sky to history and science. When you see the stars, you are looking at things that shaped ancient myths. For example, the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh tells of a "Bull of Heaven." You can also see how the planets move through this area throughout the year. Even meteor showers, like the Taurids in November, come from this part of the sky. It is a wonderful way to see how the Earth, the Sun, and the stars all move together.
