SN 1054

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A supernova is a huge explosion of a star. One famous event is called SN 1054. It was a bright light in the sky. This explosion left behind a cloud of debris. We call this cloud the Crab Nebula.

The nebula is located near the star Zeta Tauri. Inside the nebula is a pulsar. A pulsar is a spinning star called the Crab Pulsar. This object is one of the most studied things in space. It is very bright in its own category.

We can see how the explosion worked by looking at the cloud. In 1921, Carl Otto Lampland saw changes in the nebula. He noticed the structure was changing. Later, John Charles Duncan used old photos to check this. The photos showed the cloud was growing larger. The parts were moving away from the center. They moved faster as they got further away.

This movement shows the way it works after an explosion.

History helps us know when this happened. Chinese astronomers recorded the event in the year 1054. They called the bright light a guest star. It was visible for 642 days.

It was even bright enough to see during the day. Other records exist from Japan and the Islamic world. There are even drawings in New Mexico that might show it. Some people think the pyramids at Cahokia were built because of it.

Many scientists worked to solve the mystery of the nebula. Charles Messier saw it in 1758. He thought it was a comet. He made a famous catalogue to avoid such mistakes. The nebula is the first item, M1, in his list.

In 1928, Edwin Hubble noticed the cloud was growing. He thought it was from a star explosion. He linked it to the year 1054. In 1942, Jan Oort proved the link was certain.

This story connects old stories with new science. We use old books to find facts about space. For example, the Song Shi is an old Chinese book. It tells us the star appeared on July 4, 1054.

Scientists like Nicholas Mayall used math to find the distance. He estimated the nebula is 5000 light-years away. This helps us understand how big our galaxy is. It is amazing how a bright light from long ago helps us today.
