SN 1006

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

In the year 1006, a massive explosion happened in space. This event was a supernova, which is a giant star explosion. It was likely the brightest star event ever recorded in history. This star was about sixteen times brighter than the planet Venus. It appeared in a part of the sky called the constellation Lupus. Scientists believe it was about 7,200 light-years away from Earth.

This explosion was a type Ia supernova. This means two small stars called white dwarfs merged together. The merging caused a blast so strong that it destroyed the stars completely. Because of this, no black hole or neutron star was left behind. Instead, the explosion left a huge shell of gas. This shell is called a supernova remnant. It is a circular shape that is about 20 parsecs wide.

Many people saw this "guest star" across the whole world. Observers in China, Japan, Iraq, and Egypt all wrote about it. In Egypt, an astronomer named Ali ibn Ridwan described it. He said the star was two to three times larger than Venus. He noted the light was a little more than a quarter as bright as the Moon. Monks in Switzerland also recorded seeing it from the north.

Different people had different ideas about the bright light. A Chinese astrologer named Zhou Keming told the emperor it was a lucky star. He said it was a brilliant yellow color. In Iran, a philosopher named Ibn Sina watched the star for three months. He said it looked like it threw out sparks. He also noticed that the color changed as time went on. Some people even thought the star was a sign of famine or plague.

We can still find clues about this explosion today. In 1965, researchers Doug Milne and Frank Gardner found the remnant. They used a radio telescope to link the gas shell to the star. Scientists even found a signal from the blast in ice from Antarctica. This signal is found in nitrate deposits deep in the ice. Even though the star was far away, it left a mark on our world.
