Ibn Yunus was a brilliant thinker from Egypt. He lived during a time of great discovery. He was a master of math and astronomy. Astronomy is the study of stars and planets. He was likely the greatest astronomer of his time. His work was very special because it was so careful. He used precise math to understand the moving sky.

He worked by watching the sky very closely. He looked for solar and lunar eclipses. An eclipse happens when one space object blocks another. He recorded many of these events. He also watched when planets met in the sky. This is called a conjunction. For example, he saw Venus and Mercury meet in the year 1000. He even noted their exact distance from each other. His math for this was exactly correct.

Ibn Yunus was born in Egypt around 950 to 952. He came from a family of very smart people. His father was a famous historian in Fustat. His grandfather was also a scholar of astronomy. The leaders of Egypt, called the Fatimids, helped him. They gave him gifts for his hard work. They even built him an observatory on Mount Mokattam. This was a special place for looking at stars.

He spent twenty-six years working for the Fatimid leaders. He worked for Caliph Al-Aziz Billah and his son Al-Hakim. He wrote a huge book of math tables. This book is called al-Zij al-Kabir al-Hakimi. It was finished around 1007 AD. His math was incredibly accurate. His numbers were correct up to seven decimal places. This helped people make very good calendars. Many astronomers studied his work for a long time.

Ibn Yunus also helped change how we use math. He was an expert in trigonometry. This is math that uses angles and circles. He found a way to make hard math easier. He turned hard multiplication into simple addition. This helped people solve very long problems. Today, we still remember his name. There is a crater on the Moon named after him. It is called the Ibn Yunus crater.
