He was a polymath, which means he studied many different subjects. He worked in math, astronomy, and physics. People often call him the "father of modern optics." This is because he changed how we understand light. Optics is the science that studies how light behaves.

His work helped scientists understand how we see the world around us.

Before his time, people had different ideas about sight. Some thought the eye sent out rays to touch objects. Ibn al-Haytham proved this was not how it worked. He showed that light bounces off an object first. Then, that light enters the eye. This is called intromission theory.

He also argued that vision happens in the brain. He noticed that what we see can change based on our own experiences.

He was a pioneer of the scientific method. This is a way of finding truth through careful tests. He believed a hypothesis must be supported by experiments. These experiments must use math or clear steps that others can check.

He used these methods to study how light travels in straight lines. He also studied how light bends through things like water. This is called refraction. He also studied how light bounces off surfaces, which is called reflection.

Ibn al-Haytham was born around the year 965 in Basra. This place is in modern-day Iraq. He spent much of his working life in Cairo, Egypt. During a difficult time in Cairo, he lived under house arrest. Legend says he pretended to be mad to stay safe.

While in hiding, he wrote his most famous work. This was a seven-volume book called Kitab al-Manazir. In English, we call it the Book of Optics. He lived until about the year 1039 or 1040.

His ideas traveled far across the world. His books were translated into Latin many centuries later.

Famous scientists like Kepler and Galileo used his work. They studied his ideas during the Scientific Revolution. Even today, we use the rules of light he helped discover. His work on how light forms images was a huge step for science. He paved the way for how we study the physical world today.
