Before his time, people had different ideas about sight. Some thought the eye sent out rays to touch objects. Ibn al-Haytham proved this was not how it worked. He showed that light bounces off an object first. Then, that light enters the eye. This is called intromission theory.

Ibn al-Haytham was born around the year 965 in Basra. This place is in modern-day Iraq. He spent much of his working life in Cairo, Egypt. During a difficult time in Cairo, he lived under house arrest. Legend says he pretended to be mad to stay safe.

Ibn al-Haytham faced a complex problem when explaining how we see clear images. He realized that every single point on an object sends light rays in every direction. This meant that every point on an object should hit every point on the eye. To solve this, he proposed that the eye perceives perpendicular rays. A perpendicular ray is one that hits a surface at a direct, straight angle. He used a physical analogy to explain why these rays were special. He compared them to a ball thrown directly at a board. A direct hit is stronger than a ball that just glances off at an angle. He argued that these stronger, perpendicular rays allow for a one-to-one correspondence between an object and the eye.
Beyond the mechanics of the eye, he also studied how light moves. He conducted experiments to show that light travels in straight lines. He studied catoptrics, which is the study of how light reflects off surfaces. He also studied dioptrics, which is the study of how light refracts, or bends, through different materials. He even stated the principle of least time for refraction. This idea was very important for later science. It eventually became known as Fermat's principle. His work helped bridge the gap between mathematics and the physical behavior of light.
Ibn al-Haytham was also a pioneer of the scientific method. He lived five centuries before the scientists of the Renaissance. He argued that a hypothesis must be supported by experiments. These experiments must use procedures that others can confirm. He also believed that mathematical reasoning was essential to science. He did not just guess how things worked. He used math to prove his ideas. This approach changed science from a matter of philosophy into a process of testing and proof.
His life was filled with both great success and great difficulty. He was born around 965 in Basra, which is in modern-day Iraq. He later moved to Cairo, Egypt, to work and tutor nobility. At one time, he tried to help regulate the flooding of the Nile River. However, he failed to complete this task and angered the caliph Al-Hakim. His influence reached far beyond the Islamic Golden Age. In the late 12th or early 13th century, his work was translated into Latin.
