Have you ever noticed how a straw looks bent in a glass of water? This happens because light changes direction when it moves from air into water. Scientists call this bending refraction.

Ibn Sahl
Ibn Sahl

A clever thinker named Ibn Sahl wanted to understand this movement. He studied how light travels through different materials. He looked at how light behaves when it hits curved shapes. By using math, he found a way to predict exactly how much light would bend. This discovery helped people understand how to control light using glass and mirrors.

Ibn Sahl used geometry to solve the puzzles of light.

He figured out a mathematical rule for refraction. This rule is very similar to what we now call Snell's law. He used this math to design special shapes for lenses. These are called anaclastic lenses. These lenses are very special because they focus light rays perfectly. They can take many light rays and bring them to one single point. He also studied different types of mirrors, like parabolic and ellipsoidal mirrors.

Ibn Sahl lived a long time ago during the Islamic Golden Age.

Ibn Sahl
Ibn Sahl

He was a Persian mathematician and physicist. He worked at the Buyid court in Baghdad. We do not know his exact religion or his specific home country. Historians have tried to find these details using his name. However, his name does not give us those answers. He lived around the years 940 to 1000. He was a very important person in the history of science.

We know about his work because of old books called manuscripts.

One manuscript was found in Damascus, Syria. It was called "On the burning instruments." Another manuscript was found in Tehran, Iran. The Tehran book is much longer, but it has some damage.

Ibn Sahl

Around the year 984, he wrote a special paper about light. He was one of the first Muslim scholars to study the ideas of Ptolemy. His work was a big step forward for science. It helped set the stage for other famous thinkers.

His ideas help us understand the tools we use every day.

Ibn Sahl

He used his math to design tools that could use focused light to burn things. This required very precise shapes for lenses. His work was a precursor to the work of Ibn al-Haytham. Ibn al-Haytham wrote a famous book about optics thirty years after Ibn Sahl. Because of Ibn Sahl, we can better understand how lenses and mirrors work. His math turned the mystery of light into a clear science.
