He was born in Nishapur in 1048. He was a polymath, which means he studied many different subjects. He mastered math, astronomy, philosophy, and literature.

His life was full of learning and travel. He studied under many great teachers in his youth. He even visited the famous library of the Ark in Bukhara. His deep knowledge made him a very respected person in his time.

As a mathematician, Khayyam did things that were very new. He found a way to solve all third-degree polynomials. These are math problems involving a power of three.

He used shapes to find the answers. He looked at where two curves, called conic sections, would cross each other. This method was very special and different from others. Later, a man named Descartes used a similar idea. Khayyam also studied the rules of geometry. He looked closely at Euclid's parallel axiom.

He even described a special shape called a Khayyam-Saccheri quadrilateral.

Khayyam was also a master of the stars. He wanted to know exactly how long a solar year lasts. He and his team set up an observatory in Isfahan.

They worked hard from 1074 to 1079. Their measurements were incredibly accurate. They found the year was about 365.24219858156 days long. This was a huge achievement for that time. Because of this work, he helped design the Jalali calendar. This solar calendar uses a 33-year cycle. It is so good that a version is still used today.

Beyond science, Khayyam was a famous poet. He wrote short poems called quatrains. These are poems made of four lines.

Many people in the English-speaking world know his work. This happened because of a translation by Edward FitzGerald in 1859. His poems are often beautiful and thoughtful. Some of his verses are even used as decorations on his tomb. Even though he was a scientist, his words touched many hearts. He lived a long life of nearly 83 years.

Khayyam's life connects the world of numbers to the world of nature. His math helped us understand shapes and ratios. His astronomy helped us track the sun and seasons. He even thought about how numbers and ratios work together.
