Girard Desargues was a very clever man from France. He lived from 1591 to 1661. He worked as a mathematician and an engineer. He was also an architect who designed buildings.

Desargues is famous for starting a field called projective geometry. This math helps us understand how shapes look from different views. It is a way to study how lines and shapes work together. His ideas changed how we see the world through math.

Desargues used math to solve real-world problems. As an engineer, he built a system to lift water. This system was near Paris. He used a special kind of wheel for this job. This was called an epicycloidal wheel. People did not know how this principle worked at that time. He also worked as an architect starting in 1645. He planned many private and public buildings in Paris and Lyon.

His family was very important in the city of Lyon. His father was a royal notary. The father also worked for the courts in Lyon. Desargues may have worked as a tutor too. Some people think he helped a man named Richelieu. He might have served as a technical consultant in that group.

He spent much of his life thinking about shapes and light. His work built on ideas from many years before him.

Desargues wrote down many of his big ideas in books. In 1639, he wrote about sections of a cone. A cone is a shape that looks like a party hat. In 1643, he published another book called Pratique du trait a preuves.

Later in life, he wrote a paper with a short title. The title was DALG. Some people think this stands for Des Argues, Lyonnais, Géometre. His work was rediscovered and published again in 1864.

Today, we still remember his name in many places. There is a crater on the Moon named Desargues.

In math class, you might hear about Desargues' theorem. This is a special rule about shapes. There is also something called the Desargues graph. These names show that his work is still very important. He helped us learn how to measure and see the world.
