He lived from 1809 to 1882. He was born in a place called Saint-Omer. His father was an army officer named Claude-Joseph Liouville. Joseph studied at the École Polytechnique and graduated in 1827. He also studied engineering at the École des Ponts et Chaussées. However, he decided to follow a path in mathematics instead. He eventually became a professor at the École Polytechnique in 1838. He also taught at the Collège de France and the Faculté des Sciences.

Liouville made many important discoveries about numbers and shapes. In 1844, he proved that transcendental numbers actually exist. These are special numbers that are not roots of simple equations. He showed this by using a specific type of number. He used numbers where the digits are only 0 to 9. He also worked on how to solve hard math problems. In 1838, he found a way to solve certain equations. This method used something called successive approximations. He also helped share the work of a man named Évariste Galois. This helped many other mathematicians learn about new ideas.

Math is often used to understand how the world works. Liouville used math to study physics, which is the study of motion and energy. He and his friend Jacques Sturm created the Sturm–Liouville theory. This theory helps solve problems involving heat or how things move. They were inspired by how heat moves through a cylinder. Liouville also studied how fluids rotate when they are at rest. He even looked at how electricity and magnetism work. His ideas helped people understand how many things in nature change over time.

Liouville was a very busy and respected leader in science. He started a famous math journal in 1836. People often called it "Liouville's Journal" even after he stopped being the editor. He was elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 1839. He was also a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. In 1853, he joined the American Philosophical Society. He even spent some time working in politics after the 1848 Revolution. He worked with many famous scientists like Lord Kelvin.

Today, we still see his name in many places. There is a crater on the Moon named Liouville. Scientists use his ideas to study how tiny particles move in quantum mechanics. His work on equations is still a standard way to solve problems. He also helped many young students become great mathematicians. People like Charles Hermite and Joseph Bertrand studied with him. His life shows how much one person can help the world of science. He left behind a huge legacy for everyone to study.
