Ernst Kummer was a brilliant German mathematician. He lived during the 1800s. He was born in Sorau, Brandenburg, in 1810.

He first studied Protestant theology. Later, he switched his focus to math. He won a prize for a math essay in 1831. This work helped him earn a PhD from the University of Halle. Kummer was a man of many different interests. He used math to help people in many ways.

Kummer did many important things with math. He worked on a famous puzzle called Fermat's Last Theorem. He proved this theorem worked for many prime exponents.

He also came up with the word "ideal." This word helped people think about numbers in new ways. He studied how shapes and numbers work together. One special shape is called a Kummer surface. This surface has 16 singular points. He also studied how light rays move in systems.

Kummer's life was full of learning and teaching. He taught at a gymnasium for ten years. A gymnasium is like a high school.

One of his students was Leopold Kronecker. Kronecker went on to have a great math career too. Kummer also taught army officers. He taught them about ballistics. Ballistics is the study of how objects fly through the air. He even wrote about how air resistance affects flying objects.

Kummer had a very large and busy family. He married a woman named Ottilie Mendelssohn in 1840.

Ottilie was part of a famous family. Her cousin was the musician Felix Mendelssohn. Kummer and Ottilie had 13 children together. After Ottilie died in 1848, Kummer married Bertha Cauer. Bertha was also a cousin of Ottilie. Kummer's daughter Marie married a mathematician named Hermann Schwarz. His family was full of smart people.

Math is all around us in the world. Kummer helped us understand how numbers and shapes connect.

His work on prime numbers is still used today. His ideas about "ideal" numbers helped build new theories. Even the name of an asteroid honors his memory. Kummer retired from his work in 1890. He lived in Berlin until he died in 1893. His life shows how math can be used for many things.
