Solid geometry

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Imagine you are holding a ball or a box. These objects take up space in the world around you. This study of shapes in three-dimensional space is called solid geometry.

Scientists also call this subject stereometry. It focuses on the space inside a shape. This amount of space is known as volume.

A solid figure is a shape with a closed surface. For example, a solid ball includes a sphere and its inside. Solid geometry helps us measure these different volumes accurately.

There are many different types of solid shapes to learn. A cube is a shape with six square faces.

A cuboid is similar but can have rectangular faces. You might also see a pyramid with a flat base and a single point on top.

A cone is another shape that tapers to a point. Some shapes have straight, parallel sides like a cylinder.

Other shapes are called polyhedrons because they have flat faces and sharp corners. You can even find complex shapes like an ellipsoid, which is a stretched sphere.

People have been curious about these shapes for a very long time. The Pythagoreans studied regular solids many years ago.

Later, the Platonists studied shapes like the pyramid and the cylinder. A man named Eudoxus made huge progress in this field. He figured out how to measure the volume of many shapes.

He proved a pyramid has one-third the volume of a prism. This rule works if they have the same base and height. Eudoxus also likely discovered how a sphere's volume relates to its radius.

Math experts use many different tools to study these objects. They use analytic geometry and vector techniques to solve hard jobs.

These tools use linear equations and matrix algebra. These methods are very important for studying even higher dimensions. Some shapes are made by rotating a curve around an axis.

For example, a hyperboloid comes from rotating a hyperbola. This math is used in many places in our modern world.

Solid geometry is not just for old books and dusty classrooms. It is used in 3D computer graphics every single day.

This helps artists create realistic worlds in movies and games. When you see a character move in a game, math is helping.

It helps the computer understand how shapes look from different sides. You can see solid geometry when you look at any 3D model. It connects the math in your head to the real world.
