Shape

A shape tells us about the form of an object.

It describes the outer boundary or the surface. Shape is different from other things like color or texture. It is also different from where an object sits. In geometry, we say a shape stays the same if you move it. It stays the same if you turn it or flip it. Even if you make it much larger, the shape is still the same.

Area
Area

This is how we recognize things in the world.

Some shapes are flat, which are called plane shapes. These lie on a flat surface like a piece of paper.

You might see a circle or a square on a page. Other shapes are solid, which are called three-dimensional shapes. These take up space, like a ball or a box.

A sphere is a solid shape that looks like a ball. A cube is a solid shape with six flat faces. We can even use these simple ideas to describe real things. For example, a manhole cover is shaped like a disk.

We can group simple shapes into different families. Polygons are shapes made of straight lines that close together.

We name them by how many sides they have. A triangle has three sides, while a quadrilateral has four. A pentagon has five sides and a hexagon has six. There are even bigger names like heptagons and octagons. Some quadrilaterals are special, like squares or rectangles. Other shapes have curves instead of straight lines. These include circles and ellipses.

Mathematicians use special words to compare two different shapes.

If two objects are exactly the same size and shape, they are congruent. If they are the same shape but different sizes, they are similar. You can think of similarity as one shape being a larger version of another. There is also a way to compare bendable objects. This is called a homeomorphism. It describes how you can stretch or bend a shape without tearing it. A circle and a square are actually quite similar in this way.

In the real world, shapes are often very complex.

A coastline or a plant might not look like a simple square. These hard shapes can be studied using special math called differential geometry. Some scientists even use a method called Procrustes analysis. This helps them measure the difference between two shapes. They might use it to compare the bones of different animals. Even though the world is messy, math helps us find the patterns within it.
