A triangle is one of the most basic shapes in geometry.

It is a flat figure made of three straight lines called sides. These sides meet at three points called vertices or corners. Every triangle has three internal angles where these sides join together. A very special rule is that these three angles always add up to 180 degrees. This total is the same as a straight angle. You can also find the area of a triangle by measuring it. If you know the height and the base, the area is one-half of their product.

We can group triangles into different types using their sides and angles. If all three sides are the same length, it is an equilateral triangle. An isosceles triangle has two sides that are the same length. If all three sides have different lengths, we call it a scalene triangle. We also look at the angles to name them. A right triangle has one angle that is exactly 90 degrees. If all angles are smaller than that, it is an acute triangle. If one angle is larger than 90 degrees, it is an obtuse triangle.

People have been studying these shapes for a very long time. Much of what we know comes from a man named Euclid. He wrote about these ideas in a famous work called the Elements. His ways of naming and grouping triangles are more than two thousand years old. Many of the names we use today come from his original Greek words. We still use his translations in Latin to talk about math. This old knowledge helps us understand how shapes work in the world today.

Triangles appear in many places in our daily lives. You might see an equilateral triangle on a yield sign. You can also find isosceles triangles in the shapes of building gables. Some famous structures use these shapes, like the Great Pyramid of Giza. While some think its faces are equilateral, they are actually isosceles. Triangles are even used on national flags. You can see them on the flag of the Philippines and the flag of Saint Lucia.

Triangles are also very important for building strong things. They are used in many types of construction and design. In three dimensions, triangles can make up the faces of solid objects. A shape called a tetrahedron is made of four triangles. Some solid shapes, called deltahedra, are covered entirely in equilateral triangles. Pyramids also use triangles for their sides. Even in science, triangles help us understand how molecules are shaped. They are a building block for many things in our universe.
