Imagine spinning a shape in a circle. This movement creates a brand new surface in space. We call this a surface of revolution.

The shape you spin is called the generatrix. The line you spin it around is called the axis. If you spin the shape all the way around, it makes a solid object. This solid object is called a solid of revolution. This idea helps us understand how round things are made. It turns flat lines into three-dimensional shapes.

Different shapes make very different results when they spin.

If you spin a straight line that is parallel to the axis, you get a cylinder. If the line is not parallel, you might create a cone. A circle can make a sphere if you spin it around its diameter. If you spin a circle around an axis that does not touch it, you make a torus. A torus looks like a ring or a donut.

You can also spin a square to make a hollow ring. These ring shapes with holes are called toroids.

Math lets us look closely at these shapes. If you slice a surface of revolution with a plane, you see patterns. Slices made by planes through the axis are called meridional sections. These sections show you the original shape you spun.

Other slices are made by planes that go across the axis. These slices are always perfect circles. Some special shapes, like certain hyperboloids, are also surfaces of revolution. We know they are special because all their cross sections are circles.

Finding the area of these surfaces is a big job for math. We use calculus to find the exact size of the surface. One way to do this is by using Pappus's centroid theorem. This theorem uses the path of the center of a small segment of the curve. We can also use formulas with coordinates like x and y. For example, a sphere with a radius of one has a specific area. Math helps us calculate these numbers very accurately.

Some shapes are very special because they are "minimal."

A minimal surface of revolution uses the smallest amount of surface area possible. This is a hard problem to solve in math. There are only two types of these minimal surfaces. One is a flat plane. The other is a shape called a catenoid. These shapes are important for understanding how surfaces work in our world.
