Solid geometry

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Some shapes take up space. We call these solid shapes.

Square pyramid

Solid geometry is the study of these shapes. It looks at how they fill space. This amount of space is called volume.

Cone 3d

Many different shapes exist. A pyramid has a base and a top point. A cone tapers from a base to a point.

Cylinders
Cylinders

A cylinder has straight sides. A sphere is like a round ball.

People have studied these shapes for a long time. A man named Eudoxus found important rules. He showed how to measure them. He proved a pyramid is one-third the volume of a prism. A prism and a cylinder must have the same base and height.

Ellipsoide

Other shapes are more complex. An ellipsoid is a shape made from a sphere. You can make one by stretching the sphere. Today, we use solid geometry for 3D computer graphics. This helps make the worlds in video games look real.
