Bernhard Riemann was a brilliant German mathematician. He was born on 17 September 1826 in Breselenz. His father was a Lutheran pastor who had fought in the Napoleonic Wars. Riemann showed a great talent for math at a young age. However, he was also very shy and had weak health. He often felt afraid when speaking in front of people. Despite these struggles, he became one of the greatest mathematicians ever.

Riemann studied many different areas of math. He worked on a field called real analysis. In this area, he created the Riemann integral. This is a way to measure things like area under a curve. He also studied Fourier series to understand how functions work. Another big part of his work was complex analysis. He used special shapes called Riemann surfaces to explain complex numbers. These surfaces helped make math easier to see and understand.

His path to becoming a mathematician was not easy. He originally went to the University of Göttingen to study theology. He wanted to become a pastor to help his family. While there, he met the famous mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss. Gauss saw Riemann's talent and told him to study math instead. Riemann moved to the University of Berlin in 1847 to follow this path. He studied under many great teachers during his time in Berlin. Eventually, he returned to Göttingen to lead the math department in 1859.

Riemann changed how we think about shapes and space. He started a field called Riemannian geometry. Most people think of space in three or four dimensions. Riemann suggested that we could use many more dimensions to describe reality. He used math to describe how surfaces curve and bend. This work was very important for later scientists. It laid the foundation for Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity. Without Riemann's ideas, our understanding of the universe would be different.

Riemann was a very dedicated person. He was a Christian and felt math was a way to serve God. He married Elise Koch in 1862, and they had a daughter. Sadly, he died of tuberculosis in Italy in 1866. He was reciting the Lord's Prayer with his wife when he passed away. He is buried in the cemetery in Biganzolo. After he died, some of his papers were lost by a housekeeper. Many people believe his lost work contained even deeper secrets.
