Ernst Kummer was a famous German mathematician. He was born in 1810. He first studied religion. Later, he studied math. He won a prize for a math essay in 1831. This helped him earn a PhD.

Kummer did many things with math. He worked on a hard puzzle called Fermat's Last Theorem. He proved it worked for many prime numbers. A prime number is a number like 2, 3, or 5. He also made up the word "ideal." This helped people study numbers in new ways. He studied how shapes and numbers fit together. One shape he studied is called a Kummer surface. It has 16 special points.

Kummer was also a teacher. He taught at a school for ten years. He even taught army officers. He showed them how to study ballistics. Ballistics is the study of how things fly through the air. Kummer had a very large family. He had 13 children. Many people in his family were also smart thinkers. He lived in Berlin until he died in 1893.
