Augustin-Louis Cauchy was a brilliant man who studied the hidden rules of our world.

He was a French mathematician, an engineer, and a physicist. Cauchy was famous for making math much more precise. He was one of the first people to clearly prove the main ideas of calculus. This work helped create a field called real analysis. He also helped start the study of complex analysis. Many people today still use the ideas he discovered.

Cauchy was a very hard worker who never stopped thinking about puzzles. He wrote about eight hundred research articles during his life. He also wrote five complete textbooks to help others learn. His work was so important that many math ideas carry his name. For example, in the study of elasticity, sixteen different ideas are named after him.

He even worked on how things move and bend in physics. He was a very productive thinker for many years.

Cauchy's life began during a very busy time in France. He was born on August 21, 1789, just one month after the French Revolution started. His father was a high official in the police in Paris. Because of the revolution, the family had to move to a place called Arcueil. After things became safe again, they returned to the city. Cauchy was a great student and won many prizes for his work in Latin. He eventually became a civil engineer after studying at the École Polytechnique.

His career had many different parts and many changes.

He worked as a junior engineer in a place called Cherbourg. There, he helped with projects like the Saint-Cloud Bridge and the Ourcq Canal. Later, he became a famous professor at the École Polytechnique. He even lived in other places like Switzerland and Italy. In Turin, he was given a special job to teach physics. He also spent time in Prague as a tutor for a young prince.

Even when life was hard, Cauchy stayed true to his beliefs. He sometimes lost his jobs because he refused to take certain oaths. This happened after the July Revolution in 1830 changed the government. He spent years in a difficult spot with the Bureau des Longitudes. Even without pay, he continued to study how stars and planets move. He also helped found schools to train new teachers. Cauchy's life shows how much one person can discover through steady work.
