Jacob Bernoulli was a famous mathematician from Switzerland. He was born in the city of Basel to a family of spice merchants.

His father wanted him to study religion and become a minister. However, Jacob also loved to study math and the stars. He traveled across Europe from 1676 to 1682 to learn. He met many great scientists like Robert Boyle and Robert Hooke. These travels helped him learn the newest ideas of his time.

Jacob did many important things in the world of math. He was one of the first people to use a new type of math called calculus. Calculus is a way to study how things change. He and his brother Johann also helped start a field called the calculus of variations. Jacob also looked at how shapes work. He found a way to split any triangle into four equal parts.

He even thought of a special shape called the lemniscate.

One of his most famous discoveries came from thinking about money. He studied how interest makes money grow over time.

He noticed that if you add interest more often, the total amount grows in a special way. This led him to find a very important number called *e*. This number is a mathematical constant that stays the same. Later, a mathematician named Euler found the exact value for it.

Jacob also wrote a very important book called *Ars Conjectandi*. This book was published in 1713, eight years after he died.

It was all about probability, which is the study of chance. He wrote about how likely it is to win games of luck. He also shared the law of large numbers. This law helps us understand how patterns appear over many tries. His work in probability is still very important today.

Jacob had a complicated relationship with his brother, Johann. At first, the two brothers worked together on math problems. Later, they became rivals and fought in books. They used hard math puzzles to test each other's skills.

Jacob died in 1705 when he was 50 years old. He wanted a special spiral shape on his tombstone. It was meant to show strength and staying the same through change. His grave is in a large church in Basel.
