Leonhard Euler was a brilliant thinker from Switzerland.

He was a polymath, which means he studied many different subjects. He worked in math, physics, astronomy, and even music theory. People called him a "universal genius" because of his huge imagination. He also had an extraordinary memory for facts.

He spent much of his adult life in Saint Petersburg, Russia, and Berlin, Prussia. Euler was one of the most productive scientists in all of history. He wrote 866 different publications during his life.

Euler helped make math much easier to read and write. He introduced many of the symbols and names we use today. For example, he used the Greek letter pi to talk about circles. He used the letter $e$ for a special constant called Euler's number. He also used capital letters for the angles of a triangle.

He helped define the idea of a mathematical function. A function is a way to show how one thing relates to another. These tools allow mathematicians to share their ideas clearly with others.

Euler loved to solve very hard puzzles. One famous puzzle involved the Seven Bridges of Königsberg.

By studying this problem, he helped start a field called graph theory. He also studied shapes that have many sides, called polyhedrons. He discovered that for shapes without holes, a certain pattern always stays the same. This special number is called the Euler characteristic. He even solved a famous math puzzle known as the Basel problem.

His life was full of travel and important work. He was born in Basel on April 15, 1707. He started university in Basel when he was only 13 years old. Later, he moved to Russia to work at the Imperial Russian Academy of Sciences. He eventually moved to Berlin to work for King Frederick II.

During his time in Berlin, he wrote hundreds of articles. He even became a tutor for a princess. His ability to explain science helped him reach many people.

Even after he passed away, his work stayed important. He died on September 18, 1783.

Other famous mathematicians studied his books to learn. Pierre-Simon Laplace called him the master of all mathematicians. Carl Friedrich Gauss said that studying Euler's work was the best way to learn. Euler's ideas still help us understand the world today. We use his math to study everything from ships to the stars.
