Leonhard Euler was a Swiss polymath who transformed the landscape of science.

A polymath is a person who excels in many different fields of study. Euler was active in mathematics, physics, astronomy, logic, geography, music theory, and engineering. He is often called a "universal genius" due to his vast imagination and extraordinary memory. His massive body of work includes 866 publications and extensive correspondence.

This collection is known as the Opera Omnia Leonhard Euler. He is widely regarded as the greatest mathematician of the 18th century.

Euler was a master of mathematical notation and terminology. He helped create the visual language that modern mathematicians use to communicate. He popularized the use of the Greek letter $\pi$ to represent the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter. He also introduced the letter $f$ to denote a mathematical function.

Other contributions include using the Greek letter $\Sigma$ for summations and $\Delta$ for finite differences. He used the letter $e$ to represent the base of the natural logarithm, now called Euler's number. In geometry, he used lowercase letters for triangle sides and capital letters for angles.

One of Euler's most significant achievements was founding new branches of mathematics. He developed graph theory, which studies how points and lines connect. He famously applied this to solve the Seven Bridges of Königsberg problem.

This work also laid the foundations for topology, the study of geometric properties. In the realm of shapes, he discovered the Euler characteristic. He proved that for a polyhedron with no holes, the number of vertices and faces minus the number of edges always equals 2. He also made influential discoveries in analytic number theory, complex analysis, and infinitesimal calculus.

Euler's mathematical insights extended into many practical and physical sciences. In mechanics, he reformulated Isaac Newton's laws of motion in his two-volume work, *Mechanica*. This work provided a better way to explain the motion of rigid bodies. He also studied the elastic deformations of solid objects and the bending of beams. In fluid dynamics, he formulated partial differential equations for the motion of inviscid fluid. His studies in optics, spread across three volumes, helped improve the design of telescopes and microscopes. Even his work on ships helped improve maritime navigation.

Euler's life was marked by significant international movement and academic success. He was born in Basel, Switzerland, on April 15, 1707. He enrolled at the University of Basel at the age of 13. There, he studied under the famous professor Johann Bernoulli.

Euler eventually moved to Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 1727 to work at the Imperial Russian Academy of Sciences. He rose through the ranks to become a professor of physics in 1731. In 1741, he moved to Berlin to join the Berlin Academy under Frederick the Great. He lived in Berlin for 25 years, producing hundreds of scientific articles.

Despite his scientific focus, Euler was a gifted communicator to the public. While living in Berlin, he served as a tutor to Princess Friederike Charlotte of Brandenburg-Schwedt. He wrote over 200 letters to her regarding natural philosophy. These were later published as *Letters of Euler on different Subjects in Natural Philosophy Addressed to a German Princess*. This work became more widely read across Europe and the United States than his formal mathematical texts. It demonstrated his rare ability to explain complex scientific ideas to a non-specialist audience.

Euler's legacy continues to influence every major field of mathematics and science. After his death on September 18, 1783, his importance was recognized by the greatest minds of the next generation. Pierre-Simon Laplace famously stated that Euler was the master of all mathematicians. Carl Friedrich Gauss noted that studying Euler's works remains the best school for various mathematical fields.
