Imagine a giant airplane wing slicing through the air. There is a special math rule that explains how that wing stays up. This rule is called Bernoulli's principle. It describes how fluids, like water or air, move and behave.

This idea is a part of the conservation of energy. Energy is something that stays in a system even when it changes form. Daniel Bernoulli used math to show how this works in moving liquids. His work helps us understand how many modern machines function today.

Bernoulli's work follows a very clear path. He looked at how energy moves through a fluid. He showed that when a fluid moves faster, its pressure changes. This is a key part of fluid mechanics. He also studied how vibrating strings move in patterns.

He even looked at how people make choices with money. He noticed that people care about more than just the amount of money. They care about how much that money makes them feel happy or safe. This idea is called utility.

Daniel Bernoulli was born in Groningen in the Netherlands. He came from a famous family of mathematicians from Basel, Switzerland. His father was Johann Bernoulli, a man who helped create calculus. His uncle was Jacob Bernoulli, who studied probability.

Daniel and his father had a very hard relationship. They even tied for first place in a contest at the University of Paris. This caused a lot of tension between them. Daniel studied medicine and math at several different universities. He earned his PhD in anatomy and botany in 1721.

In 1724, he became a professor of math in St. Petersburg. He was not very happy living in Russia. He left in 1733 due to illness and disagreements about his pay. He later returned to the University of Basel to teach.

In 1738, he published his most important book, Hydrodynamica. He also wrote a paper about the tides. This work helped him win a prize from the French Academy. In 1750, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.

Many things we use today rely on his big ideas. The carburetor in an engine uses his math to work. Airplane wings use his principle to fly through the sky.

He also helped start the study of economics and risk. He studied how people deal with uncertainty. In 1766, he used math to show how inoculation could help people. His many discoveries changed how we see the moving world. He was even put in the International Air & Space Hall of Fame in 2002.
