In 1729, he developed a polynomial root-finding algorithm known as Bernoulli's method. He also contributed to the study of vibrations by analyzing the movement of strings. 
His personal life was marked by both high achievement and intense family conflict. He was born in Groningen, in the Netherlands, to a family that had emigrated from Antwerp to escape religious persecution. His father, Johann Bernoulli, was a famous developer of calculus.
