Cauchy's early life was shaped by the political turmoil of the French Revolution. He was born on August 21, 1789, just one month after the revolution began. His father, Louis François Cauchy, was a high-ranking official in the Parisian police. Because of the revolution, the family had to flee to Arcueil to stay safe. After the Reign of Terror ended in 1794, the family returned to Paris. Cauchy showed an early talent for mathematics. On the advice of the mathematician Lagrange, he attended the École Centrale du Panthéon. Although he won many prizes in Latin and the humanities, he chose a path in engineering.

In 1805, Cauchy placed second out of 293 applicants on the entrance exam for the École Polytechnique. This school focused on providing high-level scientific education for civil and military engineers. Cauchy completed the course in 1807 at the age of 18. He then graduated with highest honors from the École des Ponts et Chaussées. After finishing his studies, he worked as a junior engineer in Cherbourg starting in 1810. He managed projects like the Ourcq Canal and the Saint-Cloud Bridge.

During this busy time, he still managed to submit three mathematical manuscripts to the Institut de France.

Cauchy eventually left engineering to pursue the abstract beauty of mathematics. He returned to Paris in 1812 after falling ill from overwork. Between 1813 and 1815, he spent time working on symmetric functions and algebraic equations while on sick leave. In 1816, he was appointed to the Académie des Sciences to replace a member removed for political reasons. This appointment caused significant friction with his peers, who viewed his selection as an outrage. Despite this, he became a full professor at the École Polytechnique in 1816. He also married Aloïse de Bure in 1818, whose family helped publish much of his work.

Political shifts in France often interrupted Cauchy's professional life. The July Revolution of 1830 changed the government and caused riots near his home. Because he refused to swear an oath of allegiance to the new regime, he lost most of his positions in Paris.

He lived in exile for several years, moving to Switzerland and then to Turin, Italy. In Turin, he accepted a chair of theoretical physics created specifically for him. He also spent time in Prague as a science tutor for the thirteen-year-old Duke of Bordeaux. This period of tutoring lasted until 1838 and resulted in very little mathematical research.

Cauchy returned to Paris in 1838, but his refusal to take political oaths continued to cause problems. He was elected to the Bureau des Longitudes in 1839, an organization used to solve problems regarding positions at sea. However, the king refused to approve his election because he would not take the required oath. For four years, Cauchy remained in a strange position where he was elected but not a formal member. He did not receive pay or participate in meetings during this time. Despite these obstacles, he remained loyal to science and presented a dozen papers on celestial mechanics to the academy in 1840.

In his later years, Cauchy remained a strong supporter of the Catholic Church. He helped found the Institut Catholique and worked with the École Normale Ecclésiastique to train teachers. His career spanned many different fields, from the practical work of building bridges to the most complex theories of physics and math. He contributed significantly to mathematical physics, particularly in the area of continuum mechanics. Cauchy's ability to connect deep mathematical proofs with physical reality left a lasting mark on the scientific world. His massive body of work continues to serve as a foundation for modern mathematics.
