He was a mathematician, an engineer, and a physicist. He was very good at math from a young age. Cauchy studied how numbers and shapes work. He helped create a field called real analysis. This field uses calculus, which is a way to study change.

Cauchy was a very busy worker. He wrote five complete textbooks. He also wrote about eight hundred research papers. Many math ideas now have his name on them. In the study of elasticity, sixteen ideas are named for him.

He worked as an engineer for a few years. He worked on bridges and canals. Later, he became a professor at a big school. He taught many students at the École Polytechnique. Cauchy lived through many changes in France. He sometimes had to leave his home and his family. Even when he was far from home, he kept working on math. He studied how stars and planets move in space.
