He was a lawyer, but he loved math. He was a very smart man. He studied many things like light and shapes.

Fermat helped start the study of calculus. Calculus is a way to measure change. He found a way to work with curved lines. This helped later thinkers like Isaac Newton. He also studied how light moves. He found that light takes the path of shortest time.

Fermat was a leader in number theory. This is the study of how numbers work. He wrote many ideas in letters to his friends. One famous idea was written in a book margin. He called it Fermat's Last Theorem. He said the margin was too small for the proof. A man named Andrew Wiles finally proved it in 1994.

Fermat also helped start the study of probability. Probability is the study of how likely things are to happen. He worked on this with Blaise Pascal. He used math to help a gambler understand dice games. Fermat lived from 1601 to 1665.
