He lived in a city called Basel. His family sold spices. At first, he studied to be a minister. But he also loved math and the stars. He traveled across Europe to learn from great thinkers.

Jacob did much important work. He helped find new ways to use calculus. Calculus is a way to study how things change. He also studied how money grows with interest. This work helped him find a special number called *e*.

His most famous work was a book called *Ars Conjectandi*.

This book was about probability. Probability is the study of chance and luck. It helps us see how likely things are to happen. He even wrote about how much people might win in games.

Jacob worked with his brother, Johann. At first, they helped each other. Later, they became rivals. They even wrote sharp notes to challenge each other. Jacob died in 1705.
