His father wanted him to sell spices. Instead, Johann studied medicine and math. He worked on math puzzles with his brother, Jacob. They were among the first to use calculus. Calculus is a way to study how things change.

Johann was a very smart teacher. He helped write the first math textbook on calculus. He also taught a famous student named Leonhard Euler. Johann liked to debate other thinkers. He defended the ideas of a man named Leibniz. He even entered a contest about how hard objects move. He did not win the top prize, but he earned an honorable mention.

Johann was also known for being very competitive. He often fought with his brother Jacob. He even had a hard relationship with his son, Daniel. They both wrote books about how liquids move. Johann once tried to claim his work was older than his son's work. He was a man who loved math and winning.
