Charles Hermite was a famous mathematician from France.

He spent his life studying numbers and patterns. He looked at algebra and number theory. He also studied analysis and elliptic functions. These are different ways to use math to solve hard puzzles. His work helped people understand how numbers work together. He was very good at finding new ways to solve equations.

Hermite faced a very hard job during his school years. He was born in Dieuze in 1822. He had a deformity in his right foot. This made it hard for him to walk. He wanted to study at the École Polytechnique. This was a famous school for science and math. He studied hard for a year to pass the test. He was admitted in 1842. But the school would not let him stay because of his foot. He did not accept their strict rules. He quit the school instead of staying under their conditions.

He did not stop learning after he left school. Hermite studied privately for five years. He made many new friends who were great mathematicians. These friends included Joseph Bertrand and Joseph Liouville. In 1847, he passed his baccalauréat exams. He married Louise Bertrand in 1848. That same year, he was elected to the French Academy of Sciences. He later became a professor at the University of Paris. He taught there until he died in 1901.

Hermite made many big discoveries in math. In 1842, he wrote about a math rule called the Abel–Ruffini theorem. He showed how to solve certain hard equations. He also worked on the theory of invariants. He discovered something called the law of reciprocity. One of his best works happened in 1873. He proved that the number e is transcendental. This means e is a special kind of number. It cannot be found using simple algebra. This was a very big deal in math.

Many people remember Hermite for his great mind. He was given a high honor called the Legion of Honour. He was also a member of many science groups. Even the Moon has a way to remember him. There is a crater near the Moon's north pole named after him. This shows how important his work was to the world. His life shows that you can do great things even when things are hard.
