He was born in 1822. He loved to study numbers and patterns. He studied many areas like algebra and number theory. These are ways to use math to solve puzzles.

Hermite faced some hard times in school. He had a foot that did not work well. A big school in Paris would not let him stay. He did not give up. He studied on his own for five years. Later, he became a teacher at that same school.

He made big discoveries in math. In 1873, he proved something special about a number called e. He showed that e is transcendental. This means it is a type of number that cannot be found using simple algebra. He also worked on how to solve hard equations.

Many people respected his work. He was part of the French Academy of Sciences. He even received a high honor called the Legion of Honour. Today, a crater on the Moon bears his name.
