Qin Jiushao was a very famous thinker from China.

He lived a long time ago during the Southern Song dynasty. He was born in Ziyang, which is in the Sichuan province. His family actually came from the Shandong province. Qin was a mathematician, a writer, and an inventor. He was also a meteorologist who studied the weather. Many people think he was one of the greatest math minds in Chinese history. He did not spend all his time doing math, though. He held many different jobs for the government in several provinces.

Qin wrote a very important math book in 1247 CE.

This book is called Shùshū Jiǔzhāng. It is also known as the Mathematical Treatise in Nine Sections. The book helped people solve many hard puzzles. It explained how to solve equations with many parts. It also covered things like surveying and military matters. One special part used a method called Da yan shu. This helped people solve a type of math problem called the Chinese remainder theorem. Qin even used the symbol for zero in his written math.

Qin was a very clever inventor too.

He wanted to help people understand the weather. This was important because rain helps people grow food. He invented Tianchi basins to catch rain. These are tools called rain gauges used to collect weather data. He also used large snow gauges made from bamboo. These were placed in mountain passes and high lands. He even wrote about how to use these measurements in his math book. This helped people track how much it rained or snowed.

Qin discovered many new ways to use math.

He found a special formula for finding the area of a triangle. You can find the area if you know the lengths of the three sides. This is the same formula found by Heron of Alexandria. He also found a way to work with long sequences of numbers. This way of evaluating polynomials is called Horner's method today. He also recorded how experts calculated data about the stars. They used the timing of the winter solstice to help them.

Qin's life was not always easy or simple.

After his math work, he went into politics. He worked as a government official in many places. Some people said he was boastful or corrupt. He was even accused of bribery and poisoning his enemies. Because of these problems, he lost his jobs many times. Even with these hard times, he became a very wealthy man. His many talents changed how people saw math and science. He remains a key figure from the thirteenth century.
