He lived during the Liu Song and Southern Qi dynasties. His family had a long history of studying the stars and math. His grandfather, Zu Chang, worked on government building projects. His father, Zu Shuozhi, was a very well-educated man. Zu grew up in Jiankang and showed great talent as a youth. Because he was so smart, he studied at special academies. He spent his life solving puzzles about numbers and the sky.

One of Zu's most famous jobs was finding the value of pi. Pi is a special number used to measure circles. To find it, Zu used a very clever method. He imagined a shape with 24,576 sides inside a circle. He used wooden sticks called counting rods to keep track of his work. By doing this, he found a value between 3.1415926 and 3.1415927. This was a record of precision that lasted for almost 900 years.

This value is often called Zu's ratio.

Zu was also a master of the stars and time. He created the Daming calendar in the year 465. This calendar was much more accurate than others used at the time. He could tell how long a year lasted with great detail. He calculated a year as 365.24281481 days. He also studied the sun and the moon. He used his math to predict eclipses four times over 23 years.

His work was so advanced it even confused later scholars.

Aside from math, Zu was a very talented inventor. He helped build water-powered hammer mills in 488. He is also credited with inventing Chinese paddle boats. These boats used wheels to move through the water. This helped people travel much faster than before. He also fixed a famous machine called the south-pointing chariot. He used bronze to make the gears work perfectly.

This machine used mechanics to point south instead of using magnets.

Zu's ideas helped change how people understood the world. He worked with his son, Zu Gengzhi, on math books. They found a way to calculate the volume of a sphere. A sphere is a shape like a ball. They used a special formula to find this answer. Many of his written works were lost after the Song dynasty. However, his name lives on in science today.

There is even an asteroid named after him.
