As an astronomer, Zu achieved unprecedented precision in his observations. In 465, he introduced the Daming calendar. This calendar was so accurate that it confused scholars in later dynasties. He was able to distinguish between the sidereal year and the tropical year. He calculated the length of a year to be 365.24281481 days. This is extremely close to the modern value of 365.24219878 days. He also calculated the Jupiter year to be about 11.858 Earth years. His modern measurements show the actual value is approximately 11.862 years. By calculating the overlaps between the sun and moon as 27.21223, he successfully predicted four eclipses over a 23-year period.

Zu was also a highly skilled inventor and engineer. In 488, he was responsible for constructing water-powered trip hammer mills. He is also credited with inventing the Chinese paddle boat, known as the Qianli chuan. These boats used paddle wheels to travel faster than existing vessels. These ships could cover hundreds of kilometers without needing the wind. These technological innovations made transportation much more reliable during the Southern Qi dynasty.

In 478, Zu successfully re-invented the south-pointing chariot. This device was originally created by the engineer Ma Jun centuries earlier. The machine used intricate bronze machinery and differential gears to work. It did not use magnets like a modern compass. Instead, it used mechanics to keep a figurine pointing south as the vehicle moved. When the Emperor obtained an old shell of this device, it lacked the internal machinery. Zu reconstructed the mechanism so it could turn smoothly and indicate direction with perfect uniformity.

Zu Chongzhi's legacy continues to influence science and mathematics today. The fraction he discovered was not found in Greek, Indian, or Arabian manuscripts until 1585. This means the Chinese possessed this extraordinary ratio over a millennium before Europe. His name is honored in several ways in the modern world. There is an asteroid named 1964 VO1 ZUC in his honor. The lunar crater Tsu Chung-Chi is also named after him. His life serves as a bridge between ancient observation and advanced mathematical theory.
