In 1127, Han helped escort the crown prince to safety. This prince became Emperor Gaozong and started the Southern Song dynasty. Han advised the new emperor to retake lands in the north. However, the emperor did not follow this advice. Han eventually retired from military service after seeing corruption in the imperial court. Han Shizhong was a prominent military general, poet, and politician. He lived during the late Northern Song and early Southern Song dynasties.
His military career began in 1105 when the Western Xia kingdom attacked. Han enlisted in the army of Yan'an Prefecture to resist this invasion. He quickly gained a reputation for his exceptional archery skills. During a stalemate at Yinzhou, Han personally broke into the city. He killed an enemy general and threw the general's head outside the city walls. This bold action encouraged the Song army to charge forward and capture the city. He later led elite troops to resist counter-attacks at Haopingling, where he killed a military supervisor's son-in-law.
Beyond combat, Han was a gifted military inventor. He developed various modified bows to improve accuracy. He also created chain-like armor to protect his soldiers. To prepare his cavalry, he designed a horse jumping obstacle course. He even built specialized archery ranges for practice. These technical contributions helped his troops face much larger enemy forces. Because of his ability to win against massive odds, he earned the nickname "Able to defeat ten thousands."
In 1120, Han participated in suppressing a local rebellion. He reportedly infiltrated a rebel stronghold alone to capture the leader, Fang La. Although he achieved this victory, a court official named Xin Xingzong took the credit. It was not until commander Yang Weizhong reported the truth that Han was granted his official rank of sanguan. During a banquet held to honor this success, Han met his future wife, Liang Hongyu. Liang was a woman with an exceptional military mind. She was impressed that Han worried about the suffering of peasants rather than just celebrating his victory.

In 1127, Han played a vital role in the survival of the dynasty. He led a thousand-man army to escort the crown prince, Zhao Gou, to safety in southern China. Even though the enemy was ten times larger, Han's forces were victorious. This successful escort allowed Zhao Gou to ascend the throne as Emperor Gaozong. This event marked the beginning of the Southern Song dynasty. Han's leadership helped establish a new capital in Yangzhou and ensured the continuity of the imperial line.
Despite his many successes, Han Shizhong faced political challenges. He advised Emperor Gaozong to retake the lost northern lands. However, the emperor chose to neglect this advice. Han also witnessed rampant corruption within the Song imperial court. The tragedy of Yue Fei's execution further highlighted these systemic issues. Because of this corruption, Han eventually decided to retire from military service. He lived until his death on 16 September 1151, leaving behind a legacy of courage and invention.
