Long ago, a man named Yuan was a leader.

Yuan Chonghuan was a famous general in China. He served the Ming dynasty.
One of his biggest wins was at the Battle of Ningyuan. He had only 9,000 men. His enemy had 130,000 soldiers! But Yuan's cannons were very accurate. He won the battle and stopped the enemy from moving forward. Later, he won another big battle against a leader named Hong Taiji.
Even though he was a hero, Yuan faced great trouble. Some people at the royal court made false claims. They said he was a traitor. The Emperor believed them and ordered his death.
Years later, a new leader looked at the old records. He found proof that Yuan was innocent. Today, people still remember him as a brave leader who protected his land.
Yuan Chonghuan was a famous leader in China. He served the Ming dynasty many years ago.
Yuan was very good at using big guns called cannons. He wanted to make them better for his army. He studied how they worked. He even worked with Jesuits to change European cannon designs. This helped the Ming army have better tools. He studied every part of the cannon. He wanted to make sure they hit exactly where he wanted. This skill helped him win very important battles.
His military career had many big moments. In 1626, he led a small group of 9,000 men. They fought at the first Battle of Ningyuan. The enemy leader, Nurhaci, had 130,000 soldiers! Even though the enemy was huge, Yuan won. This battle stopped the Jurchen advance. Later, he defeated Nurhaci's son, Hong Taiji. Hong Taiji had an army of 200,000 soldiers.
Even though he was a hero, Yuan faced a very hard end. Some people at the royal court made false claims. They accused him of being a traitor. The Chongzhen Emperor believed these lies. In 1630, the Emperor ordered Yuan to be executed. This happened at a place called Ganshiqiao in Beijing. Many people in the country felt very sad about this. They thought he was treated very unfairly.
History eventually showed the truth about Yuan. Nearly one hundred years later, the Qianlong Emperor looked at old records. He found proof that Yuan was innocent. The Emperor even tried to find Yuan's family to help them. Today, people visit the Yuan Chonghuan Memorial in Beijing.
Yuan Chonghuan was a prominent Chinese politician, military general, and writer. He served the Ming dynasty during a period of intense conflict.
Yuan was a skilled expert in artillery. He worked to improve the Ming arsenal by using European cannon designs. During his travels, he befriended Jesuits to learn about these weapons. He studied every part of the cannon to ensure accuracy. This technical knowledge allowed him to aim at specific positions. He used modified "hongyipao" cannons to defend his territory. This focus on technology changed how the Ming army fought. It allowed smaller forces to face much larger armies.
His military career reached its height during two major battles. In the first Battle of Ningyuan, Yuan led 9,000 militiamen. They faced Nurhaci, the ruler of the Later Jin, who had 130,000 soldiers. Yuan's precise cannon fire wounded Nurhaci and led to a Ming victory. This success prevented the Jurchen forces from advancing further. Later, Yuan faced Nurhaci's successor, Hong Taiji. Hong Taiji led a massive army of 200,000 soldiers. Most of these troops were ethnic Mongol soldiers. Yuan defeated this force during the second Battle of Ningyuan.

However, Yuan's career was marked by political conflict. He executed a Ming general named Mao Wenlong. Some saw this as a mistake because Mao was talented. Others supported Yuan because Mao used civilians as shields. This execution made powerful enemies among the court eunuchs. These officials were influential people who served the emperor. Later, in 1629, Yuan defended the capital from a surprise attack. The Jurchen army had broken through the Great Wall. Yuan arrived at Beijing just days before they did. He defeated 100,000 Jurchen Eight Banners outside the city walls.
Despite his success, Yuan was accused of treason. Some eunuchs claimed he was collaborating with the enemy. The Chongzhen Emperor believed these false charges. In January 1630, the Emperor ordered Yuan's arrest. He was sentenced to death by lingchi, which is known as "slow slicing."
History eventually cleared Yuan's name of all wrongdoing. Nearly a century later, the Qianlong Emperor of the Qing dynasty investigated. He found conclusive evidence in old imperial archives. These records proved that Yuan was innocent of treason. The Emperor even tried to find Yuan's descendants to reward them. Today, his legacy lives on through the Yuan Chonghuan Memorial. This memorial is located in Longtan Park in Beijing.
