He lived during the late Northern Song and early Southern Song dynasties. Han was born in 1089 to a poor farming family in Shanxi province. During his life, China faced many threats from strong neighbors. These included the Western Xia, the Liao dynasty, and the Jin Empire. In 1105, the Western Xia attacked his home region. This event led Han to join the army to protect his people.

Han became a very skilled soldier and a clever inventor. He was famous for his excellent archery skills. He also created new tools to help his troops. These included modified bows and special chain-like armor. He even built obstacle courses to train his cavalry horses. Han was known for winning battles with very few soldiers. He often faced much larger enemy armies and still won. This earned him the nickname "Able to defeat ten thousands."

His life changed when he met his future wife, Liang Hongyu. They met at a banquet held to honor his success. At the time, Han was not celebrating his victory. He was worried about the Jurchen people and the harm war could cause to farmers. Liang was impressed by his kindness and his smart mind. She was also known for having a great military mind. The two were married and worked together to serve the country.

Han fought many important battles against the Jin army. In 1121, he led fifty cavalrymen to fight two thousand Jin riders. He used drums and clever formations to win the fight. Later, at the city of Zhaozhou, his troops ran low on food. Han took only 300 soldiers for a surprise night attack. This bold move forced the large enemy force to retreat. These victories helped protect the Song dynasty during very hard times.

In 1127, Han helped escort the crown prince to safety. This prince became Emperor Gaozong and started the Southern Song dynasty. Han advised the new emperor to retake lands in the north. However, the emperor did not follow this advice. Han eventually retired from military service after seeing corruption in the imperial court. He lived a life of service until he died on 16 September 1151. He is remembered as a hero who fought for his people.
