This book shows us how early technology worked step by step. It contains the earliest known written recipes for gunpowder. To make this powder, people mixed saltpeter, sulphur, and charcoal. They also added other ingredients like pitch and dried lacquer. They would mix these into a paste with tung oil and wax. Then, they put the mixture into paper containers tied with hemp twine. This helped keep the powder from getting damp.

Many important people helped bring this book to life. Emperor Renzong of Song helped sponsor the whole project. He even wrote the preface for the book. A team of scholars worked for five years to finish it. The chief editor was a man named Zeng Gongliang. He worked with a scholar named Ding Du and an astronomer named Yang Weide.

The way it classified ships was used by many writers later on. It also helped people understand how to use chemical mixtures. By writing these formulas down, the authors shared secrets with the future. This book remains a key piece of history for us today.
