Trou au Natron

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Trou au Natron is a huge volcanic crater in Chad. It is part of the Tibesti Massif in Northern Africa. People call it a caldera. A caldera is a large pit made by a volcano. This volcano is now extinct. We do not know when it last erupted. It sits just southeast of a volcano named Toussidé.

This crater has a very interesting way it works. Small vents on the floor release hot steam and mineral water. This water carries many minerals with it. The hot desert sun then dries the water away. When the water goes, the minerals stay behind. They form a white crust on the ground. This crust is made of salts like natrolite.

Scientists think this place has a long history. The shape of the hole is not even. This suggests many big explosions made it. Each blast may have made the pit deeper. Huge chunks of debris might have flown far away. Some rocks may have reached 10 kilometers from the crater. This formation may have happened during the Pleistocene era.

The caldera is a very large place. It has an irregular diameter of about 12 kilometers. The pit can be 400 meters deep. There are four small volcanic cones on the floor. These cones are made of scoria or andesitic tuff. The white salt crust is called the Tibesti Soda Lake. This name comes from the French name for the site.

Long ago, this dry place looked very different. It was once home to a deep lake. The water may have been 200 meters deep. We know this because of fossils in the ground. These fossils are shells and tiny water life. They are about 14,500 to 15,000 years old. These remains show us how the land changed.
