Dallol is a strange and beautiful place in Ethiopia.

It is a hydrothermal system located in the Danakil Depression. This area is one of the hottest and driest spots on our planet. It is also one of the lowest places on land. Some parts of the site sit below mean sea level. The name Dallol comes from the Afar people. It means dissolution or disintegration. This name describes the landscape of salt plains and acid ponds.

This system works because of heat deep underground. Long ago, basaltic magma moved into old salt deposits. This movement created a salt dome structure. Today, hot springs discharge liquid from this dome. The liquids are very salty and very acidic. In fact, they are much more acidic than most other volcanic sites. The water is also much saltier than the ocean. The springs release gases like carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. These hot fluids create many different mineral patterns on the surface.

Many people have visited this difficult land over the years. An Italian Colony discovered the volcano in the past. They stayed in the area to extract sulfur. Exploring near the crater was hard due to the extreme heat. The site is also dangerous because of toxic fumes and acid basins. The Erta Ale Range was easier to reach because it is higher. In 1926, a phreatic eruption helped form the Dallol Volcano. This eruption created a crater within the salt dome.

There are many amazing facts about the numbers at Dallol. The site features many colorful pools and terraces. The colors change from white and green to yellow, orange, and red. These colors come from the oxidation of inorganic iron. The springs release brine that is almost ten times saltier than seawater. These fluids are also hotter than 100 degrees Celsius. They contain more than 26 grams per liter of iron. Some parts of the region are nearly sterile. However, scientists found tiny life called Nanohaloarchaea inside mineral deposits.

Dallol is a very important place for science. Scientists use it for astrobiological studies. This means they study how life might exist in space. They want to know the limits of what living things can handle. The site is what they call a "poly-extreme" site. This is because it has many extreme qualities at once. It is very hot, very salty, and very acidic. This helps us understand how life works in harsh worlds.
