Scientists are very curious about whether life has ever existed on Mars.

While we have not found conclusive evidence yet, the planet is a top priority for study. Mars is very similar to the early Earth in many ways. This makes it a great place to learn how life might begin. We study Mars to find clues about the origins of life itself. Even if life never lived there, the planet holds a record of ancient conditions.

To understand Mars, we must look at how its environment changed over time. Long ago, during the Noachian period, Mars had liquid water on its surface. This water flowed in rivers and sat in lakes. A magnetic field once acted like a shield to protect the atmosphere. When that field was lost, the solar wind stripped the air away. This caused the planet to become much colder. Much of the water then turned into ice or moved underground.

People have been looking at Mars for a very long time. In the mid-17th century, people first noticed the ice caps at the poles. Later, William Herschel proved that these caps grow and shrink with the seasons. In 1854, William Whewell suggested that Mars might have seas and land. Later, Percival Lowell wrote books about Martian canals in 1895 and 1906. He thought a civilization built them, but these were actually optical illusions. By 1909, better telescopes proved that these canals did not exist.

Today, we use advanced robotic rovers to search for real clues. The Curiosity rover found that Gale Crater once held a freshwater lake. It also found organic compounds, which are the building blocks of life.

In 2018, NASA announced they detected seasonal changes in methane gas. This gas could come from tiny living things or from rocks. Most recently, on September 10, 2025, NASA reported that the Perseverance rover found a possible biosignature. This was a rock in Jezero Crater that hints at ancient microbial activity.

Searching for life on Mars is like being a detective. We look for chemical biosignatures, which are signs left behind by living things. We also look for things like boron or specific minerals in the soil. Because the surface is harsh with radiation, we look for life in the subsurface. We want to find places where tiny microbes could have lived in the past. By studying these clues, we hope to solve the mystery of our cosmic neighbors.
