A Mars rover is a remote-controlled vehicle designed to drive on the surface of Mars.

These robots are very useful for exploring the Red Planet. They have many advantages over stationary landers that stay in one spot. Rovers can examine much more territory as they move along. They can also be directed toward interesting features like rocks or craters.

Some rovers can even move to sunny positions to stay warm during winter. This movement helps us learn how to control robots in very far places.

Rovers work by following specific goals to study the Martian environment. NASA uses them to search for evidence of ancient life. They look for signs of tiny living things called microorganisms. Scientists also search for evidence of ancient water, such as old rivers or lakes.

Finding these things helps us understand if Mars was ever habitable. Rovers also study the geology, which is the study of rocks. They also look at the climate to see how the weather works. This information helps us prepare for future human exploration of Mars.

Many different missions have sent rovers to Mars over the years. The first five successful rovers were managed by the American NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Sojourner was the first and landed in 1997. Spirit and Opportunity both landed in 2004. Spirit worked until 2010, but its wheels became trapped in sand. Opportunity was very successful and worked for 15 Earth years.

It stopped working in 2018 after a large dust storm blocked the sunlight. This storm prevented the rover from recharging its batteries.

More recent missions have brought even more advanced technology to Mars. The Curiosity rover landed in Gale Crater on August 6, 2012. It is still working today as of 2025. Perseverance is a newer American rover that landed on February 18, 2021. It even carried a small Mars helicopter named Ingenuity on its belly.

China also sent a successful rover named Zhurong to Mars. Zhurong landed in May 2021 in a region called Utopia Planitia. It was the first rover from China to operate on the Martian surface.

Comparing rovers to things we know helps us see how they work. You can think of a rover like a remote-controlled car on a very big playground. Instead of a person holding a controller, scientists send signals from Earth. Some early Soviet probes were even tied to their landers with cables. These were called tethered probes and moved on skis.

Today, many rovers like Curiosity are on their own. They use many different tools to study the ground. These tools include cameras, drills, and even microphones to hear the planet.
